Words from Kelly ‘Dash’ Hansen
Growing up in a family in New Zealand that was always into sports and the outdoors, and having had a previous career as a high school physical education teacher, I have always passionate about fitness and health.
I was given the opportunity to experience MadLab School of Fitness for the first time when working for Lululemon, and was immediately hooked.
I spent two years as a student learning how to move correctly, and got to know the faces of this amazing community. After some unsuccessful attempts at landing a teaching position in Canada—as one door closed, another opened—and I decided to change career paths. I enrolled as an apprentice coach at MadLab.
I spent a little more than a year learning how to coach, but where I was needed and what I enjoyed doing most were the behind-the-scenes tasks—the business and management side to running a world-class fitness facility and school. In 2013, I took over the daily operations of the school and am now the school’s General Manager.
I thrive on being organized and watching processes function smoothly.
Creating policies and procedures to help streamline our school’s functionality was the first part of my role. Now that our systems are under control, it’s our students who help keep our business bumping.
Today, my job is just as much about connecting with the people in our community as it is about managing the business. Spending this quality time with our students and coaches, and helping them succeed, is what I enjoy most about managing the school.
