Outside the Lines

When in 2001 I explained to my mentor teacher why I had decided to leave the teaching profession she said "Corey, when you got a colouring book you were one of those kids who never wanted to colour inside the lines, weren't you?" To which I replied, "Lines? What lines? I always hated colouring books. Give me a sheet of blank paper and let me draw my own lines!" With those words I left behind my teaching career and entered the world of professional recruiting eventually taking the helm as president of The Personnel Centre. It was scary, it was exhilarating, and the learning curve was steep! When I opened the doors to my Judo dojo in 2005 it was scary, exhilarating and the learning curve was steep. And when, in 2008, I discovered what I really wanted to do for a living and decided to make a go of it as a CrossFit coach, you guessed it: it was scary, exhilarating and the learning curve was crazy steep! And here I am. I used to have butterflies in my stomach every morning on my way to group classes wondering if I would be a good coach that day and make a difference in someone's life or not. Wondering if I would be able to earn enough that day to feed my family. Fear and discomfort told me I was growing everyday. CrossFit taught me that if you're not uncomfortable, you're not pushing yourself hard enough to get meaningful results. In training or in your life. I love CrossFit. I love coaching. I love the CrossFit Vancouver community. And I think Vancouver could be the most beautiful city in the world. But I've grown very comfortable here. I no longer feel nervous heading to work in the morning. And that makes me worry that I've grown complacent. I've stopped growing. I'm not challenging myself to take on a bigger game. So what game would I like to play that would inspire me and scare the socks off me? I already love what I do, but what would I do if I knew that I couldn't fail? What would I want to do if you told me I had only one last year to live? What secret dreams have I been too scared to pursue? What adventures lie outside the lines of my comfort and security? There are only 2 things I'd change in my life if I knew it was my last chance to do so. I'd spend more time with my wife and son. And I'd see the world. And so off I go. It's scary, it's exhilarating and the learning curve is bound to be steep. But CrossFit has given me the courage to face it head on. I know I can succeed here in my adopted home city of Vancouver, now I need to prove to myself that I can survive anywhere in the world. We'll start in Europe. April 12th, Sunghee, Kaelin and I will embark on the adventure of a lifetime as we land in Barcelona to wander the European continent without a destination or a return ticket. Our dream is to outfit an expedition truck as Europe's first CrossFit gym-on-wheels and travel coaching CrossFit (me) and Laughter Yoga (Sunghee) from our truck while Kaelin pursues his study of medieval martial arts with European masters. How will we make this happen? I honestly don't know yet. I'm hoping we can line up some likely corporate sponsors. Reebok, Rogue Fitness are you reading this? Otherwise we'll just have to improvise. Life isn't about playing safe and staying comfortable inside the lines like a colouring book. It is about taking risks and adventures and chasing your dreams. How do you think CrossFit was born? How do you think CrossFit Vancouver came to be? All the benefits my life has received from CrossFit I owe to Greg Glassman and Craig Patterson who were courageous enough to chase their unlikely dreams. Were they scared? Did they risk failure? Did they face steep learning curves? Everyday! And they still do. That's why they are such inspiring coaches! By their example they challenge us to play a bigger game. Comfortable is your couch at home. I'm taking on a bigger game. I hope I inspire you the way CrossFit has inspired me!
